The 1891 Census shows William Living

Marriage certificate (obtained from the Metropolitian Archives London.

Page 108, entry 215.   William Bowyer, 21, Bachelor, Trimming Weaver living at 3 Walmer Place whose father William Bowyer (deceased) was a builder and decorator married Annie Clara Clifton 19, Spinster, Book folder living at 5 Wyndham Street whose father Thomas Clifton (deceased) was a Vestry labourer.  The witnesses were Walter Porter and Pamela Porter

Joan Bowyer recognised Pamela Porter as being Williams elder sister.   According to the 1901 census she lived with her husband Walter (who had a wart on his nose) at 43 Earl Street.   They had two sons

Letter to Joan 11 Feb 2013

Dear Joan

Further to my visit on Saturday, I thought you might like to know that I have made progress in finding out about your fathers younger years. I enclose some copies of certificates and census’ as follows:-

1           20 April 1902

From the Metropolitan Archives, copy of register of William and Annie’s marriage showing Pamela and Walter as witness’s -

2            17 May 1896

Copy of Walter and Pamela’s register entry for their marriage showing that Pamela’s full name was Elizabeth Pamela BOYER

3            1911 Census for Walter Porter 36 years

showing the two sons.  Pamela shown as Elizabeth 34 years.   Also, living at the address is Susan Knowles aged 73 years.  Walter 14 years and William 9 years.

4            17 November 1901 Baptism of William Porter.

5            1891 Census

Showing Susan Boyer, daughter Susan, daughter Pamela and son William who was 10 years and a Scholar.   I assumed that the second Susan was mother of Pamela and William but the Census shows Susan the elder has being the mother. The address is 16 Great James Street - in multiple occupation.   This road was renamed Bendall Street.

6            1881 Census.

This is a problem because though it lists Pamela and William, the ages are 59 and 61 respectively.  My friend Linda says it is unlikely to be a mistake so perhaps these are visitors?

7            Admissions Register.   28 May 1883 William, aged 4, was admitted to Bell Street School.  This was formerly a Ragged School and later became a Secondary School.

Census 1911

In 1911 the family lived at 30 Oakfield Road Walthamstow 30 Oakfield Road

William was still a Weaver Silk born in St Marylebone.   He was 30 years old and Annie 26.

There were four children, Rose aged 8, Fred aged 7, Ena aged 4 and Ethel 10 months.

Reminiscence of Joan.

William was an athlete and short arm boxer.   He lived with either Grandmother or aunt.

Marylebone School    London

To be verified....

William Bowyer attended a 'posh' school in London paid for by an unknown benefactor. It is rumoured that he lived with his mother and an ‘aunt’.   The aunt was partial to a drop of gin and, it is said, tricked the unsuspecting William into parting with monies he received.   She offered him a lockable drawer.  It was the second in the unit.

Unbeknown to him, she held the key to the top drawer and would simply pull the drawer out of the unit and help herself to the cash in the drawer below.

So poor was William that he attended school wearing paper collars and cuffs because fabric ones could not be afforded.
