On 19th January 1891 Richard signed an Indenture to work as an Apprentice for Messrs. Nissen and Arnold, Manufacturing Stationers and Printers, 98 Fenchurch Street, E.C. London as a Compositor. At that time Richard lived at 3b (or 36) Augustus Street, East India Road. Poplar. The document was also signed by Sarah Dodd. The apprenticeship was for seven years at a starting wage of 6/- (shillings) per week rising each year to a final wage of 21/- per week. The document was sealed and stamped with two shillings and six pence embossed and coloured onto the document.
